Can Selection Criteria Toolkit help you get your ‘Dream Job’? It did for Kathy Soltan …
Hello I work for a public library in Melbourne and after reading Dawn Richards' great book, Selection Criteria Toolkit, which I borrowed from another library service, I suggested we get a copy for our libraries. I have just had a call from our bibliographic services department who say that book is now out of print, and they are unable to order it!
Is this true? I hope not, as I found it invaluable in helping me get my 'dream' job just recently, and because Dawn is Australian, it was great to find an author who could relate to getting government/school jobs here in Australia, and not have to interpret from an American source.
As I personally was so happy with the results I obtained from reading Dawn’s book, I want to share it with others who can't work out why they aren't even getting shortlisted for an interview!
The only other book we have on selection criteria is by Anne Villiers and someone has ripped out 5 pages in the middle... Dawn’s book is comprehensive and much easier to read and understand.
Can you please let me know what has happened or how we can order?
Thank you!
Kathy Soltan

Here's what a first time applicant has to say about the Selection Criteria Toolkit ...
The same weekend I picked up the book, I read it from cover to cover and I can assure you, no one has written a book (on Selection Criteria) which has given me the confidence I have now. I am not worried about writing a selection criteria now. Your book covered everything I wanted to learn and know and was obvious it was meant for someone who was writing a selection criteria for the first time.I wish you all the best with this book and many others you might write. You have done a good job with this one - easy reading with lots of learning. Excellent book Dawn. I will always treasure it.

Have you ever faced the 'Killer Criterion' about OH&S and EEO?

Now, you can pick yourself up off the floor. It's all covered in the book...and it's written in simple English.
Are you feeling overwhelmed with the whole process of applying for a government or private sector job?

How do you know what employers want in an application?
One way would be to have a crystal ball. The other way is to read the Selection Criteria Toolkit to find out how to reach the employer's special frequency and write words and phrases that make employers pick up the phone to arrange an interview with you.
For example, do you know that you have 'pure gold' just gathering dust in your cupboard at home...or wherever you keep your old appraisals, references, customer letters, etc. You'll learn how to extract this gold from the dust and transform it into 'sales tools' that make you look and sound fantastic to the employer.
Following are just a few of the new skills you'll learn when you use the Selection Criteria Toolkit:
- How to translate selection criteria from 'gobbledegook' into plain English
- How to handle the 'Killer Selection Criterion' on OH&S and EEO
- How to use 'secret sales weapons' that you have at home to ‘SELL’ you to the employer
- How to connect with the employer using proven marketing principles of 'WII-FM' and 'KISS'
- How to answer the 'Million Dollar Question': 'Should I apply for this position?'
- How to decide if it is worth applying for a position if someone is in an ‘acting’ position (this is tricky)
- How to structure your responses using an easy 5 step approach
- How to build credibility by using the marketing 'Law of Specificity' in your application
- How to 'Polish' your CV and present your document with PIZAZZ!
- How to manage your butterflies and stand out at the interview
- How to prepare answers to questions you may be asked at the interview and how to WOW the selection panel

Personnel leaving Defence. Australian Defence Force personnel face a double barrelled problem on leaving Defence. Leaving Defence can be like going to live in a foreign country with a different language, culture and business practices.
Defence personnel use so much jargon in their everyday life that they forget how to speak in normal English. For example, not many people know that NDT stands for Non Destructive Testing of Aircraft.
Personnel also have to convert their military background into civilian terms so instead of stating their position as 'WO2 Smith', they need to write 'Operations Manager' or similar depending on their particualr situation.
As if that's not enough - the next step is to answer selection criteria that's written in a totally different language that very few people can decipher.
Take heart! Thousands have already made a successful transition and now hold top paying positions in the public and private sectors.
Follow the steps outlined in the book to find your new career...and the only postings you will receive will be from Australia Post.
