Q.
I recently had to reapply for my government job after the position was restructured. Can you give me any tips to ensure I have the best chance of keeping my position?
A.
I was recently a guest speaker at a conference where 400 teachers and administration staff had to apply for permanent positions after being employed in contract or casual roles for many years.
It can be done! Here are a few tips to sell yourself in your application and at the interview.
1. When writing your application, use examples based on the actual role. This may give you an advantage over people who have not worked in this particular role before.
2. Don't assume that 'because the panel members know you', you will automatically get an interview. Your application will be rated for short-listing using exactly the same criteria as all other applicants.
3. Put the time and effort required into writing a professional application that really highlights your achievements in the role.
4. Choose referees who know you well and who will speak highly about yur work performance.
